There is no better place than this children’s ER. From the moment we walked in all the staff was amazing. The nurses and doctors were absolute perfection with my 11-year-old son. Even the nurse putting in the IV for my little, was so gentle and sweet and funny. They made the whole experience so wonderful that he is absolutely not afraid to go to the ER. He even asked to go back to visit them.

My son who has heart defects since birth had symptoms of strep. Within 15 minutes of arriving and checking in, he had vitals and swabs done. He was seen by a doctor, given a dose of antibiotics, and out the door in two hours. The care was excellent! It was Christmas evening and the ER was busy. We experienced friendliness, kindness, and professionalism. This was our first experience with St. Joe’s and I’ve already recommended them several times since. I felt heard and understood why I was bringing my son to be seen in the ER on Christmas. Thank you, St. Joe’s!

On Saturday, December 28th, my daughter fell, and we had to rush to the hospital. The staff was incredibly kind, supportive, and attentive. We waited less than five minutes before being seen, and both the nurses and doctors treated my daughter with care, love, and respect.

Dr. Cayla performed the stitches, and the nurses provided the attention and reassurance that both my daughter and I needed.

They were very on top of my son’s care. My husband didn’t even have to wait in the ER when he brought him in for asthma type symptoms. I felt confident they were monitoring him constantly while he was admitted. The care and treatments he received helped his condition improve steadily pretty much from the time he was admitted. Everyone was nice, helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough. Amazing nurses, respiratory therapists, and techs on the 3rd floor! Excellent experience overall. Obviously, hope we won’t need them again anytime soon, but this will be the place we come if we do.

My experience was last year with my 2 week old baby girl. When I first walked in I was put through a metal detector - which is understandable and appreciated for the area. Then I stood at the counter for 15-20mins where it said "children emergency check in" while staff just looked at me - finally someone told me to go over to the other side of the desk where they would check me in. Not once did the person who checked me in let me know to go over to her despite making eye contact with me several times. The wait after this was not very long to get vitals by the nurse. We were then placed into a room to wait for the doctor. When the doctor came in we discussed history and what brought me in. Overall the male doctor was nice but he said some things with a dismissive tone like "obviously there is something wrong" and "this doesn't just happen' - okay yes that is why I brought her. He recommended diagnostics to which I agreed to. He then stated that this would have to be a longer time than reported to cause a full color change around her eyes and mouth - I just let him know I was not sure how long the episode was. After which the nurses came in to get an IV catheter placed and get blood, urine and xrays. The IV catheter took well over an hour to place - they attempted 3-5 times each until one nurse came in and did it in one try. This was sad as my baby was just crying so much. I understand some times it is very hard to place an IV catheter so I was not upset at thisI was just distressed as a new mother. Overall this was not a fast process - I was in that room from the afternoon until about 7:30pm. In the middle of this the doctor came and reported that all diagnostics were normal which was a relief. He then did not give me any other option other than admitting her. I am an ER veterinarian - in a case like this admittance is usually recommended but it should not be the only option. He just said okay so we are going to admit her overnight for observation. To which I agreed. I would then wait several more hours until we were moved into the children's hospital upstairs. Once upstairs we were set up and she was placed on monitors. Someone walked into the room and started examining her. No introduction - nothing. This person went over the history with me to which I responded - "I assume you're the doctor" then she let me know that she was the doctor on staff that night. My baby started to get fussy and the doctor said in a very rude tone "are YOU SURE she's not hungry - you need to feed her every 2-3 hours and she should not be let to sleep overnight without being woken to feed". At the time I had an app that I track her feedings to which I responded that I fed her just under 2 hours ago - so according to her I was right on time. The nurse ran out of the room and got her a bottle and she ate it very well and quick. At this time I had been in the ER for well over 8 hours - 2 weeks PP and had NOT eaten myself.. So I started crying as this comment made me feel like I was a terrible mother. A plan was made for monitoring overnight and nothing else changed. I did not see that doctor again only the lovely nursing staff. At about 3:30am - nothing has changed and we asked to be discharged as the baby would not sleep and there was no where for us to sleep. The nurse said let me check with the doctor. When she came back she said "if you leave against medical advice we will have to call CPS and it is likely that your insurance will not pay for what we have done". I was shocked. I did everything for my child - she is healthy, happy and well cared for. So we stayed as we were given no other choice. The morning came and I wanted to leave ASAP. The day doctor did not come into the room until like 11am which 4 hours after I was promised he would be in there. This doctor was the only nice one that actually talked to me and not at me. This visit could have been SO MUCH better had the doctors talked to me like I was a PP mom/human vs someone that just brought a newborn to them. Bedside manner is so important.

It took 4 hours for a doctor to look into my daughter’s ears & tell me she was fine. That was only after telling the nurse that we were just leaving because we were fairly certain her head bump was not a concussion at that point. Impatient 21 month old looking for any sign of a nurse or doctor after waiting hours.

My daughter unfortunately had to go to the hospital, our first time at St.Josephs. I was so blessed to have the care that we got. These beautiful ladies were very kind and thorough. During our difficult time they made us feel very at ease. Thank you St Joseph’s staff y’all will be our first stop for now on if we may need you in the future! Thank you God Bless y’all!
